The hidden load: Are the chemicals in your home secretly affecting you & what has this got to do with coaching?

Natural cleaning products in the home

Hi I’m Sarah and I coach women, often mid-life women who may be leaders & high achievers, holding a lot, feeling stuck, frustrated or empty and dealing with menopause symptoms. Some are suffering with a level of burnout or living with chronic illness. What has low-tox living got to do with coaching, nothing & everything. I believe getting a better balance in our lives makes the biggest impact.

This isn’t what I’ve always done. Previously I had a corporate life in HR leadership.

Things changed for me following burnout and living with Fibro/ME and that is what led me to taking a long hard look at what I could do because I realised burnout wasn’t going to be fixed by changing just one thing. What I discovered about hormone/endocrine disrupting chemicals really deepened my interest in low-tox, sustainable living from a nice to do to a I must do.

Some chemicals affect the endocrine system by mimicking, blocking or interfering with natural hormones. Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals EDC’s are found in everyday products such as plastics, cosmetics, food packaging, cleaning/personal care products, pesticides and female sanitary products.

When I first looked into this, I felt quite overwhelmed by choice and ambiguity about ingredients but decided to take it in steps and stages.

Generally I’ve been really impressed with what is available and how easy it has been to switch. As well as doing me good its doing good for sustainability generally and that has to be a win, right?

I will never be perfect. I am not an authority on the subject, I am simply sharing my lived experience. My trial and error in making these changes have resulted in a list of products and suppliers that have helped me and I hope will help you.

Household cleaning products My next steps

I audited my cleaning and personal care products and then step by step I started to replace them with low-tox, eco-friendly replacements. I’d urge anyone making changes not to get too hung up on perfection just keep in mind any small change is a win for you and a win for sustainability.

I’ve used Ocean Saver for laundry sheets, dishwasher tabs and other spray/floor cleaners. They come in dissolvable capsules and are then mixed with water by you so cutting the co2 costs in shipping of what is essentially, large volumes of water. I’ve been using these products for 18 months and am really pleased with them

Also great are the Bower Collective products. Their limescale spray is second to none in my opinion and whilst I was not a fan of their original pine fragranced toilet cleaner I am a convert to their Yuzo lemon fragrance just recently launched. Also their other spray cleaners are good , unlike Ocean Saver, it comes as liquid form so not as light on the co2 but excellent products.

Toilet paper, kitchen roll and tissues I use Naked Paper and have become used to the colour now (think re-cycled cardboard) . Something I had never given a thought to was that what we usually buy is bleached and once I knew it I just couldn’t unknow it. Delivered to your door either on demand or subscription.

My personal favourite to add to the mix, is Dip I like their environmental credentials and really recommend reading their website info, it goes into the detail about what chemicals are doing to our bodies. They are currently receiving fantastic reviews. Their product is laundry sheets, dishwasher sheets*, and spray cleaner sheets so easy on the co2. They also do softener sheets but I don’t use them. I have been using these for several months now and love them. They sent a brilliant eco friendly cleaning e-book when I first ordered. and continue to email top low-tox cleaning tips if you subscribe.*In my opinion the dishwasher sheets are a WIP, Ocean Savers are better currently

The Seep Company are my go to for washing up with fantastic eco friendly bamboo brushes, sponges, scourer’s and washing up gloves.
