Ditching the Chemicals!

This is such an enormous and potentially overwhelming area, I took the view that anything is better than nothing, and I will do what I can in steps and stages. It's only when you start replacing your cleaning or skincare you realise how much you have invested.

1. The Science of the "Hidden Load"

How Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) Affect Hormones

  • Some chemicals affect the endocrine system by mimicking, blocking or interfering with natural hormones. Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDC's) are found in everyday products such as plastics, cosmetics, food packaging, cleaning products, pesticides, and female sanitary products.

  • This adds a "hidden load" to an already stressed system. Generally, I've been really impressed with what is available and how easy it has been to switch. As well as doing me good, I have found the eco-friendly alternatives often take up less space, and I certainly have fewer overall products than I used to.

2. Auditing Your Home & Personal Care

Easy Swaps for a Toxin-Free Home (Cleaning & Skincare)

I audited and replaced my household cleaning products, personal care products, and read up on natural cleaning.

  • Natural Cleaning: For simple solutions for all manner of chores, I recommend Nancy Birtwhistle's fantastic books—I am never without lemons now!

  • Cleaning Swaps: I like Dip's environmental credentials and recommend their laundry sheets, dishwasher sheets, and spray cleaner sheets—so easy on the co2.

  • Personal Care: I love Life Supplies and Up Circle.

  • Unbleached Paper: Something I had never given a thought to was that what we buy is bleached, and once I knew it I just couldn't unknow it. I will not go back to bleached. I use Naked Paper for toilet, kitchen, and tissue paper.
